Sera: Okay, but honestly? Why do you care? You don’t care about what anyone else thinks about you. You do and say what you want cause it makes you feel all good and happy—the way it should be. What’s so different with him?
Dorian: Forgive me if I’m harsh, but I don’t think you’d understand. From what I know, you never knew your own parents, right?
Sera: Yeah sure, but even if I did, they’d get an arrow in their foot if they ever made me feel like piss. No one has the right to make anyone feel bad just cause they don’t agree about stupid things.
Dorian: What if that person was always there in your life? What if that person always saw that there was food on the table whenever you were hungry, they made sure you had new and nice clothes, and they protected you from anyone that wished you harm? You look up to this person your entire childhood, you see how strong and wise they are and you want to be just like them, but after years of adoring them, you do one thing—you reveal one, little, thing—and now they don’t even want to see you anymore. Wouldn’t that matter, even to someone as free-minded as you?

Hi there, anon. This is a good question. I know I’ve asked this myself, and I’ve had this conversation with some other Solasmancers. I think the answer is different for each person and each character.
In my opinion, the physical age difference between two consenting adults is not as consequential as the power difference that could come from difference in experience, knowledge, or position. For a Lavellan who stands their ground and who Solas views as an equal, the age difference doesn’t really bother me.
Even so, I think that a twenty-something Lavellan is as young as I would go. In real life, people are not completely mature cognitively until approximately 25. The actual age is different based on life experience and other things, but it’s usually mid-20s.
Sure, this is fantasy, and Solas is well-over the 40 that he is supposed to look. Still, I think sticking with that age as a guideline is good! I don’t see much problem with a 25 year old being a 40 year old as long as 1.) the two people are consenting and 2.) neither has sway or power over the other.
